Hi!
This is a blog for free and open discussion about SWR (safe withdrawal rates) in retirement.
All ideas, comments, formulas, theories, feelings, links, references, quotes, etc about that topic are allowed and will not be edited or moderated.
Personal attacks, spam, flame wars will not be allowed and as supreme dictator only I decide what is what.
Enjoy!
Is 4% ’safe’?
Is it analytically invalid? (Note — be prepared to see questions as to what ‘analytically invalid’ means, so that we can drive for an analytically valid process, if we are indeed off track.)
If it is wrong, what is a better approach? Why? What are any issues with a ‘better’ approach?
The basic 4% rule is analytically valid. Of course it is not 100% safe niether is going to sleep tonight. It is a very good rule of thumb and a resonable starting place for most.
Thanks for the reply. That seems to be the consensus, i.e.:

but just wanted to provide a haven for anyone who might have strong views needing to be aired, but felt they were not getting a fair shake anywhere else.
They do not appear to be breaking the doors down, though, do they? [laugh]

please, come in Rob Bennett…
…
are you out there?
…
Would sure love for you to give an overview of your SWR thinking, the rationale behind your methods, and maybe some dialog as to what might be left to do to refine it…
Over and out.
The stage is yours.
i would give my honest opinion but i am afraid of what the defenders of conventional wisdom might do to me! better just to lurk than to be exposed to the snarling attack dogs.
he he he — promise, I’ll let you post whatever you like, and if the Green Meanies are rude, abusive, or personal, I’ll yank the leash on ‘em… but if the *facts* are what leave your views out of favor… well, can’t help with that :*)
Cheers!
Fact: A 12.4% SWR is the safest known.
True Fact: 16.4% SWR is just as safe.
You guys are way to conservative: with proper day trading 19.5% is doable.
Its True: care to elaborate?
NoReally: under what conditions?
Trader: what constitutes ‘proper’ day trading?
